Legends say that there was a sage named Kat. Kat had a son named Katyayan who performed a very hard penance and long austerities to receive the divine grace of Goddess Durga. Kat was famous among the ancestry of saints. With the extreme penance, Katyayana was able to please Goddess Durga and she took birth on earth by the face of the daughter of Katyayana. Sage Katyayana was the first to worship the goddess so she was also named after him ‘Katyayani’.
It is believed that Katyana worshipped her on three days, Saptmi, Ashthmi and Navmi. On the tenth day, she killed Mahishasura and freed all the devas from his atrocities. As she destroys demons, she is exactly opposite for her devotees and worshipers. She is extremely generous for her devotees. On the sixth day of Navaratri, she is offered a grand Pooja following with holy rituals and by chanting mantras. People worship her to remove their sins and bless them with her positive spiritual energy. It is believed that worshiping Goddess Katyayani on this day, devotees can feel the presence of agya chakra in their soul. To win the heart of Goddess Katyayani, one must experience the feeling of absolute self-sacrifice.
